Loran Oleg Borisovich

Oleg Borisovich was born on July 24, 1943, in Moscow. His parents were very intelligent people and both of them as well as their closest friends and other relatives, who were mostly physicians, influenced his future career choice.

In 1960, he entered the 1st Moscow Medical Institute named after I.M. Sechenov. From 1966 till 1969, after graduating from the Institute, he worked as a surgeon in city hospital in Verhnyaya Salda, Sverdlovsk region. There he specialized in elective and emergency surgical care and urology.

In 1969-1972, he was a resident at the department of urology of the City Clinical Hospital named after S.P. Botkin. He successfully defended his master's and doctoral theses in 1973 and 1990 respectively. He consistently took the positions from the assistant to the head of the department of urology with cycles of urogynecology and andrology at the Moscow Medical Stomatological Institute (the Moscow State University of Medicine and Dentistry nowadays).

In October 2011, Oleg Borisovich became the head of the department of urology at Russian Medical Academy for Post-Graduate Education. Then he returned to the City Clinical Hospital named after S.P. Botkin, which is the base of the department of urology. The latter is the place where he formed as a physician-urologist approximately 30 years ago.

Among the main priorities of his scientific and practical work are the problems of reconstructive plastic urology, andrology and urogynecology. He developed and implemented into clinical daily practice unique surgical operations, including the surgical repair of the urethra, treatment of complicated and recurrent urinary incontinence, results from female bladder and urethral injuries. He experimentally proved and used in practice such surgical operation as the formation of an artificial bladder from the intestinal segments after cystectomy done for bladder cancer, contracted bladder and interstitial cystitis.

O.B. Loran was one of the first in the country who began to perform radical prostatectomy and implant an artificial urinary sphincter which was developed under his direct involvement.

Under his supervision the unique methods of phalloplasty surgery and total urethroplasty, using a free vascularized radial skin flap, phalloprosthesis and reconstructive surgery of the vas deferens leading to male infertility were developed and implemented into clinical practice.

O.B. Loran is a recognized authority in Russia and abroad in the field of surgical urogynecology and reconstructive plastic surgery. He has the world's largest experience in the female urethral reconstruction which is reflected in one of his monographs. He read lectures in the universities of France and USA which were devoted to the problems in urogynecology.

 

The original and effective plastic operations developed by him were numerously presented at a variety of Russian and international urology congresses where they were highly recognized. Oleg Borisovich was awarded a diploma of the American Urological Association and the Urology Care Foundation for the unique surgical technique. There were two international symposiums devoted to the surgical andrology, which were hold under his leadership

 

Oleg Borisovich is an author of more than 450 scientific works and 80 of them are published abroad. He is an author of 17 monographs and has 17 patents for inventions in Russia. He has successfully supervised 46 master's theses and 15 doctoral theses.

 

In 2004, he became the corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and he is the Honored Science Worker of the Russian Federation. In 2010, he was awarded the Order of Friendship. Oleg Borisovich Loran is a member of the Bureau of the Russian society of urologists and a member of the European and International Associations of Urology.
